Waterfront living and recreation
You could think of Cayuga County as a lakeside paradise – it has the most waterfront land in Upstate New York. On the west, it borders Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes. Skaneateles Lake is on the east. In the middle is Owasco Lake. The eastern-most Great Lake, Lake Ontario, forms the county’s northern border. Manufacturing and agriculture, especially dairy farming and wineries, are economic mainstays. President Lincoln’s rival, Secretary of State William Seward, lived here, and his house is now a museum. Harriett Tubman, famous for her daring rescues on the Underground Railroad, retired here after the Civil War. Her home is now a National Historical Park.
