The Fish Company in Liverpool: A great fish sandwich at a great price

With its hidden location, you might miss The Fish Company of Liverpool But don’t. For 53 years, The Fish Company has been tucked behind the old Ponderosa Plaza, next door to the Gem and Mineral Society of Syracuse. But due to its great food and great prices, it’s developed a loyal following.

“Every week we have someone say, ‘I’ve lived in Liverpool for 30 years and never knew you were here,’” owner Cosmo Giardina said.

Service is simple. Put in your order at the counter, get a homemade side dish from the cooler and pay a small fee at the register. Your order will be ready in minutes. Behind the counter, Cosmo pulls haddock fillets from a milk-based brine and dips them into yellow batter and breading. The pieces are then dropped into peanut oil.

Fresh from Boston
The Fish Company gets its fish from Boston every Wednesday and sells shrimp, sea scallops, clams, calamari and smelt by the pound. During the colder months, it sells fresh clam chowder by the pound. But the kitchen’s most popular item is the $3.65 fish sandwich. The sandwich is so big that one haddock fillet is enough to make about three quarter-pound sandwiches.

Cosmo bought the restaurant 13 years ago. “I’ve always loved fried fish,” he said, “and I really love doing this.”

On a typical day, they’ll go through 30 to 50 pounds of fish. It could be a few hundred pounds during a busy Lent season.

Don’t miss:

Fish Sandwich ($3.65): Your basic fried haddock sandwich, served hot on a sesame hoagie roll. Order it with or without the house-made tartar sauce. You can also get marinara sauce and cheese for an extra 50 cents.

Shrimp Sandwich with Bang Bang Sauce ($3.99): The Fish Company orders larger-than-usual shrimp for its meals. For this sandwich, the kitchen fries five breaded shrimp and tops them in a sweet and spicy ‘Bang Bang’ sauce.
